Abbots Hall Chapel
Working for a private client to rebuild a Brick chapel that was crushed by a tree during a storm. Abbots chapel in Aylsham, Norfolk. The Chapel is 18c brick built construction with clay tile roof and brick mullion windows.
The tree landed on the roof causing this to collapse along with 2 elevations of the brickwork taking with it both windows. Once the tree was removed Medieval Masonry’s heritage builders deconstructed all the loose materials by hand, sorting through the rubble to locate any materials that could be reused in the restoration work.
The brick walls were rebuilt using a mix of reclaim and original bricks, we then put a new cut timber roof structure on and reinstated the clay tile roof using the same approach as we took with the bricks. The internal softwood cladding was reinstated to match the existing profiles with dado rail features and stain to match the existing colour.
The tiled floor was reinstated and the cast-iron gutters and downpipes fixed. This project was small in scale but incorporated all the conservation ideologies that set us apart from general builders. Sympathetic, patient approach, like for like replacements and minimal intervention where possible.
